Clinical Analysis of Primary Pontine Hemorrhage



Abstract
The authors represented a clinical analysis on 13 patients with primary pontine hemorrhage who had been treated conservatively at the Department of Neurosurgery, Chonnam University Medical School Hospital from February 1983 to October 1984.
The results were summarized as follows ;
1) Age incidence comprised ranging from 17 to 72 years with an average age 59.6 years and 7 were males and 6 were females.
2) On admission, neurological examination revealed loss of consciousness in all cases (13 cases), motor and respiratory disturbances in 12, pinpoint pupil and abnormal ocular position in 10, hypertension in 6 and absent oculocephalic reflex in 4.
3) CT findings of primary pontine hemorrhage were roughly divided into 3 types; massive ( I ), basis tegmentum( If ), and tegmentum (Ill). Of 13 cases, type I was 6, type II was 3 and type l>I was 4.
4) Relationship between each type of CT findings and outcome as follows Of 6 patients in type I, 4 died and 3 patients in type If, 1 died. Out of 8 survivors there were 2 patients in type I , 2 patients in type II and 4 patients in type III .
5) on discharge time, the degree of dependance to attendant, the type I was more greater than the others.
